Xiuhtezcatl is coming to Aotearoa New Zealand to spread his messages of climate activism. He’s still a teenager, but he’s spoken at the United Nations twice. He sees his age as no obstacle: “As young people, we have the advantage that the world will listen to us, more so than adults, because we’re vulnerable and we’re innocent.” Xiuhtezcatl draws on his Aztec heritage and love of music to motivate other young people to be future environmental leaders in their communities.
1pm–1.20pm: Kapa hakaKapa haka singing and dancing
Performance by rangatahirangatahi young people from the iwiiwi tribes of Taranaki Whānui.

Xiuhtezcatl, local environmentalist Kiri Danielle, and Australian musician and youth activist Jaiia Cerff tackle issues such as:
- How has climate change affected life on Earth?
- How does the pipeline protest at Standing Rock, North Dakota, relate to climate change?
- How is Aotearoa affected by climate change now, and what will happen in the future?
- How can youth make an impact on the effects of climate change?
- What effect will the Paris agreement on greenhouse gases have?
3pm–3.45pm: Talk by Xiuhtezcatl Martinez, with Q&A
A keynote speech by Xiuhtezcatl about how we need to reconnect with the Earth to build a more sustainable future. He discusses divesting from fossil fuels, and ways that youth can make change through becoming environmental leaders in their communities.
