Join the all-ages party as global dance takes over Te Papa – everything from Bollywood to Hawaiian hula. Come to a workshop, or enjoy an exuberant performance.

Celebrate UNESCO’s International Dance Day by trying out some new steps – we have fun, free workshops for all ages. See dances by community groups, and watch a series of inspiring short films.

10.45am–10.50am: Opening performance, forecourt
Le Dance starts the day’s events with a contemporary dance

11am–11.30am: Welcome and warm-up, Wellington Foyer, Level 2
Welcome, followed by a warm-up of music and dance with the Wellington Community Choir

11.30am–2.40pm: Workshops, Wellington Foyer, Level 2

  • 11.30am–12pm: Bollywood
  • 12pm–12.30pm: Hip-hop
  • 12.30pm–1pm: Samoan sasa
  • 1pm–1.15pm: Performance interval – Israeli, African, and Afro-Cuban dances
  • 1.15pm–2pm: Cuban salsa
  • 2pm–2.40pm: Interactive dance

12pm–2pm: Kids’ workshops, Te Marae, Level 2

  • 12pm–12.30pm: Charleston and swing
  • 12.30pm–1pm: Hawaiian hula
  • 1pm–1.30pm: Circus hoops
  • 1.30pm–2pm: Hip-hop

11am–3pm: Dance films, Planet Pasifika Discovery Centre, Level 4

Short films of performances by Touch Compass, New Zealand’s only professional inclusive dance company

3pm–4pm: Community dance, Te Marae, Level 4  

Performances by 12 community groups, ranging from traditional Indonesian styles to contemporary Tokelauan dance
