The first of Kjell Theøry’s four cycles starts at Te Papa’s Amphitheatre, and moves in a procession to the site of the Performance Arcade festival on the waterfront.
Chicago-based collective ATOM-r combine virtual and augmented reality with two historical sources of inspiration. They explore British computer scientist Alan Turing’s mathematical descriptions of nature. Turing was prosecuted for homosexual acts in 1952 and accepted chemical castration instead of imprisonment. They also draw on the first surrealist play, The Breasts of Tiresias (1917) – a gender-bending spectacle of male reproduction.
In Kjell Theøry, moments of comedy, absurdity, and solemn reverence appear spontaneously.
