What made Rodin so radical and modern? Why did his sculpture of Balzac divide the art world? And are some of his works overrated?
Auguste Rodin, one of the most famous artists in the world, died 100 years ago. Dr Mark Stocker explores his slow – even painful – rise to fame, the controversies he sparked, and some of his most renowned works, including The Thinker and The Kiss.
This is also a rare opportunity to see Eve, a bronze from Te Papa’s collection that relates to Rodin’s monumental work The Gates of Hell. She has recently benefited from conservation treatment, and has never looked more spectacular!
