Beyond Te Papa: Tectonics, Tsunamis and Technology

Saturday 20 July 2019, 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

$15.00 – $20.00

It takes several villages to create a brand new $12 million nature zone for a museum and it brings together groups from all different parts of the science community. We’ll be hearing from 2 of Te Papa’s key partners, GNS and GeoNet, about their involvement and knowledge around bringing to life the updated Active Land space in te Taiao | Nature. Information and technology have radically improved since the previous Active Land space was created and so we’ve asked them to share some of those highlights with us in 2 talks.

From the plate boundary to Taupo Volcanic Zone: cutting edge earth science and risk management in the new Te Taiao active land exhibit.

Graham Leonard, GNS, will speak to us about tectonics, subduction, earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes and risk science components of Te Taiao. With particular research expertise around volcanoes, tsunamis and risk we’ll also explore with him some of the research behind creating the content for Te Taiao.

Graham Leonard is a Senior Scientist within the Earth Structures and Processes Department at GNS. His particular research interests are in Taupo Volcanic Zone volcanic mapping; developing effective response to warning systems, especially for volcanic, tsunami & landslide/debris-flow processes; and quantifying/characterising & mitigating the impacts of natural hazard events.

GeoNet Technology: What it takes to go from detecting shaking across New Zealand to sending an earthquake’s location and magnitude to your phone in 2 minutes

Caroline Little, GNS Science, will talk about the GeoNet Project and the journey necessary to transform shaking recorded on hundreds of seismographs around the country into an ever-growing catalogue of 600,000 earthquakes you can explore with the interactive earthquake display that is part of Te Taiao.

Caroline Little is currently the Science Systems Development Manager within the Data Science and Geohazards Monitoring Department at GNS Science. She has a Masters in geology and has worked in lots of different areas of the GeoNet programme in her 10 years at GNS Science – these include fieldwork, communications, and as a duty seismologist.

Beyond Te Papa events are designed to share knowledge from our external relationships that either are recommended through museum staff or are related to museum content.
