Te Papa marks Anzac Day, April 25, with this entertaining production from Capital E. An Awfully Big Adventure fearlessly explores big ideas about war using song, multiple settings, and even touches of humour.

At Flanders Fields, a keen enlister in the Mounted Rifles is off on his big OE. He meets a conscientious objector, shipped to Europe as punishment for non-compliance. Along the way, we visit Gallipoli, encounter the famed New Zealand commander William Malone, and travel to the Western Front during the final stages of World War I.

Capital E says: ‘The play interrogates the impact WW1 had for New Zealanders. It is a work that explores the complexity of the times in an accessible way for students aged 7 and up.’

Suitable for ages 7+
