Allies’ victory poster, World War I
This poster celebrated the end of World War I – though people who'd lost loved ones had little reason to rejoice.
The fighting on the Western Front ended in November 1918, when the Armistice (truce) with Germany was signed. However, the official peace treaty – the Treaty of Versailles – took another half year to negotiate. It was signed in Paris on 28 June 1919.
This poster shows the flags of all the Allied countries except Russia, which had signed a separate treaty with Germany in 1918.
