Watch: Panel discussion – The art of traditional navigation

Hear from the knowledge holders of traditional navigation in Aotearoa New Zealand as they discuss the ageless science that has sustained deliberate exploration of Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa, the vast Pacific Ocean, in ocean-going waka.

Watch knowledge holders Jack Thatcher, Hoturoa Barclay-Kerr, Stan Conrad, Heemi Eruera, and Manihera Forbes as they wānanga the star constellations used as guides in traditional celestial navigation: Te Waka o Tamarēreti (the southern Milky Way) and Te Waka o Māui. This panel was facilitated by Dr Wayne Ngata.

This knowledge was returned to Aotearoa New Zealand under the guidance of Satawelese master navigator Mau Piailug and Hekenukumai Ngāiwi Busby (Papa Hek), who both feature in our exhibition Manu Rere Moana | Pacific Voyagers.

In their wake, navigators continue to live by and pass on their teachings.

Participants from left to right: Manihera Forbes, Heemi Eruera, Jack Thatcher, Hoturoa Kerr, Stanley Conrad, and facilitator Wayne Ngata.
