Richard Wolfe holds a BFA from the Elam School of Fine Arts and a PhD in art history from the University of Auckland. He is an Associate Emeritus of the Auckland War Memorial Museum (2013), where he was Curator of Display from 1978 to 1997.
Since 1987 he has written or co-authored some 45 books covering aspects of New Zealand art, natural and social history, museology and popular culture, among them five children’s books including Midnight at the Museum (1997). His most recently published books are Footprints on the Land: How Humans Changed New Zealand (2022), which appeared in a Ukrainian language edition in 2025, and Kiwi: A Curious Case of National Identity (2024). His The Collector: Thomas Cheeseman, and the Making of the Auckland Museum, with co-author Andrew McKay, will be published in late 2025. Since 1990 Richard has contributed over 70 articles to the quarterly Art New Zealand, as well as articles to other publications including The Burlington Magazine and Waka Kuaka/Journal of the Polynesian Society.
