Many people may not realise that here at Te Papa Tongarewa, we are home to Tai Tamariki, a unique early childhood centre. Tai Tamariki has been based at Te Papa on our ground floor since 2010, and is much more than a ‘tenant’. As part of this relationship, we invited the Tai Tamariki kaiako team to contribute a series of blogs sharing how they experience and use Te Papa within their learning programme.
Throughout 2025, a learning programme was created in collaboration with PB Tech. Learning Innovation Specialist Jessie Robieson has been guiding ākonga through the new Kaitiaki Creator programme and shares insights into how it started and some of her favourite outcomes here.

At Te Papa we appreciate any opportunity to improve our learning programmes and adapt them to the needs of learners. In early August we were preparing to deliver our Pacific Explorers programme to four classes of years three to five from Taita Central School. Little did we know how coronavirus would give us the opportunity to adapt the programme to be even more accessible and successful than any iteration so far.
According to TechWomen only 26 percent of those working in New Zealand’s tech sector are women – only 4% above the world average. This statistic shocked educator Jessie Robieson who’s now making it her mission to improve these numbers. One way has been through New Zealand’s first Girls in STEM Conference.
Educator Martin Langdon shares our Learning Team’s 2019 Matariki kaupapa which involved collaborating with other GLAM institutions in the Wellington region so they could reach more tamariki – after all, Matariki is a time for sharing, renewal, and innovation.
Museums can sometimes feel like alien spaces for young learners, a place where words like ‘play’ and ‘explore’ might not always be an immediate association. But for educator Martin Langdon, these are the key drivers he keeps in mind when designing learning programmes aimed at learners under 5-years-old.
