Zui: Shaping Sector Guidance for Managing Sensitive Collection Content

Join Jeanine Parkinson, CEO of Museums Aotearoa, and Mike O'Neill, Manager Imaging and Rights at Te Papa, for a conversation about emerging sector guidance being developed through a partnership between Museums Aotearoa, Te Papa, Archives New Zealand, and the Classification Office.

This interactive session will introduce the draft framework and thinking that has informed its development, while inviting feedback from museums and galleries on the practical challenges they face when collecting, digitising, displaying, and sharing potentially harmful, offensive, culturally sensitive, or ethically complex material.

Participants will have an opportunity to explore key themes currently being considered, including risk assessment, mitigation approaches, governance processes, and ethical and legislative considerations. The session is intended to test ideas, identify gaps, and ensure the guidance reflects the diverse realities of museum practice across Aotearoa. A valuable opportunity to help shape a sector resource and contribute to a shared approach for managing sensitive collection content.
