Wander free during your visit – drop your coat and bag at our secure room where a Te Papa Host is always on duty.
We can check:
Coat and bag is for day use only. Items cannot be checked in overnight.
Items we can’t check in
There are some items we cannot check in:
- kick scooters
Please don't bring your kick scooters, bikes, and tricycles inside the museum. You can park them outside at our bike or scooter racks found behind Quake Braker, near our main entrance. Remember to bring your own lock!
For free internet access throughout the museum, sign in to ‘Te Papa Free WiFi’ using your device.

- Level 1: Near our main entrance and at Te Papa Cafe
- Level 2: Near our Information Desk and outside Soundings Theatre
- Level 4: At Espresso, Treaty of Waitangi: Signs of a nation, and our Inspiration Station Discovery Centre

Our parents’ rooms have nappy-changing facilities, breast-feeding chairs, and sinks. You can also find nappy-changing facilities in the women’s toilets by Te Marae, Level 4.

Visitors with wheelchairs, mobility scooters, and other mobility vehicles can easily access most of Te Papa. Accessible areas include:
- all our exhibitions
- our cafes and stores
- most toilets.
You’ll find seats in most exhibitions and along walkways throughout the museum.
The Te Aka Matua Reading Room lift needs to be operated by a staff member. Please let us know if you'll need lift access when booking an appointment at the library.
To hire a free wheelchair or mobility scooter to use at Te Papa:
- book ahead by phoning us weekdays 8am-5pm on +64 (0)4 381 7000, or enquire at Coat and Bag Check-In by our main entrance (availability is not guaranteed).
- six wheelchairs (two are not self-propelled)
- one mobility scooter.
For security, we require a driver’s licence or credit card when hiring the mobility scooter.
Need a scooter beyond the museum?
To enquire about City-Mobility, a Wellington City Council and TSB Bank project, contact Wellington City Council.
Park close to our ground-floor entrance at one of five accessible car spaces:
- two uncovered
- three covered.
Parking cannot be reserved in advance.
Most videos at Te Papa have captions.
We offer a guided tour designed for visitors with visual impairments, focusing on touch and sound.
Certified assistance dogs have the right to access Te Papa when assisting a person with a disability. Please ensure the dog wears the appropriate coat and carries a valid ID card.
We can adapt all our private guided tours to suit special needs, and we have a popular private tour for visitors with visual impairments. You can also contact us to arrange an adapted education programme.
If you plan to visit Te Papa with a large group of visitors with disabilities, please book ahead for the Golden Days exhibition (adults) and StoryPlace sessions (children).

Te Papa’s four Discovery Centres are full of interactive games, computers, and books, and can accommodate large groups of accompanied children with special needs. Discovery Centres cannot be booked.
In the case of an evacuation, our trained staff will follow procedures to assist visitors with impairments or special needs.
